Lyle K'ang In
Impressive Disc DebutJANUARY 13,
1978NIGHTLIFEBY
JOHN BERGERLyle K'ang, Big
Island farmer better known musically for his three-year stint in the
International Touring Company of Hair, has made one of the most
impressive local disc debuts of the year with the release of his first
single, "My Girl" / "How Many Times," on Kawika Records.
The "A" side, "My Girl," is a soulful up beat arrangement of
the Temptations' classic of the mid-sixties - one of the few
reworkings of this tune that has seemed to work on its own merits.
The "B" side,
"How Many Times," is K'ang's own tune, and
equally impressive.
Both sides feature impressivemainland
quality arrangements and could easily
be mistaken as the product of a small
independent record company in any soul
center.
Actually, the disc is the work of David
"Kawiki" Crowley of Homegrown I, now better known
as the man behind the distinctive "Big Island
Sound" in contemporary local music.
Musically, the Big Island Sound
is more cosmopolitan - drawing less
heavily on folk than the early forms of
mainstream contemporary local music -
and quite possibly could become
commercially viable on the mainland in
1978.
That, at least, is Crowley's intention. Having
already established Kawika Studios as
the center of the Big Island recording
scene, he hopes that the recordings of
K'ang and other Big Island artists will
bridge the gap between the mainland and
most non-Hawaiian local recordings.
In this he has the support of a talented
pool of studio musicians - whose
feedback he acknowledges as an important
element in the continuing development
of the Big Island Sound.
With Lyle K'ang
as a leading ambassador, that success
should come.Home-grown, Big

Lyle K'ang, (the
singer) and David Crowley (the producer) are creating ripples. They
may
eventually make waves. ...K'ang's
first single, on Crowley's Kawika
Records label, sounds like a hit.
...Big
Island
stations already are plugging "My Girl," the old Temptations hit, but
both K'ang and Crowley figure that the big side will be K'ang's
composition, "How Many
Times"....K'ang
has
enough material foran
album, but
obviously it'll take
a small
fortune to do a full package...."Lyle
K'ang's record, though, is the most
exciting to come out of my studio," says Crowley...."We've had the
biggest response
with this
single."
