Lyle K'ang
is a
PRODUCER, ACTOR, PERFORMER and SINGER-SONGWRITER
LYLE performed as 'Claude'
with America's #1 Broadway
Rock Hit Musical - HAiR in Las Vegas, 1969 to 1970.
He went on tour with the Mercury and Venus National Tours,
later performing in New Haven, Connecticut during 1971.
In Niles, Chicago the Venus HAiR Tribe ended on December of 1972.

Who is Lyle K'ang?
'Because
he
and the HAiR Company could not play on the Island of O'ahu, 30
original members of
the
'Pakalolo' tribe were sent to the International Hotel in Las Vegas (now
the Hilton) for a one-year run after none of the theatres in Honolulu
wanted to
risk bad publicity from the ‘obscene’ show.' (Arrived in Las Vegas, Nevada - October, 1969)
Who is Lyle K'ang?
Lyle was asked to take a prominent role in Hawaii 5-0.
Even after Jack
Lord, the
star of the Hawaii 5-0 show personally
came
to ask Lyle at the director's
request to take the part. Lyle thanked
Mr. Lord, as Jack asked the
director to leave the two alone for a minute, but then
Lyle said,
"...that he was not interested in a part playing a 'bad' guy or

members of the original Hawai’i (Pakalolo) cast, Lyle accepts an award of appreciation upon
arrival at Honolulu Airport following performances in Los Angeles. The remaining tribe
members, originally cast
in Hawai’I in
1969, looked forward to this day for a year-and-a-half. Honolulu’s
Neil Blaisdell Center sold out each night of the run. After five weeks, Lyle and company were
back
‘on the road’ to Alaska and
points East.

This song was written in Santa Monica,
California on an
October morning in 2006.
I
sat down in the sun near a homeless woman
with her eyes closed. Although her belongings (all she owned) were
scattered on the cement walkway around her, she was invisible to
passersby. Her eyes were closed. I said, "Hello". She didn't say
anything. I watched but her mouth did not move, though I could have
sworn I heard her say, 'Immediate Situation!'

AND VETERANS.

HOMELESS WOMAN
SAID, "IT'S
AN IMMEDIATE SITUATION"!!
I left her for a moment, went
across the street to a
coffee house and asked to borrow
a
pencil and paper. I anxiously
started to write down what I had heard. Slowly, more and more came
to mind, until I had the makings of a song. I went
back and
sat
next to her and thanked her for the song. Just like the minutes
previously, she did not say anything
-
just rocked back and forth with
so much pain. I got up and started to walk around
several
blocks to
make sense of it all. As suddenly as the words came, my mind flooded
with music. I moved the words with rhythm and rhyme. I stopped a woman
going into a shop and asked her to listen to the first part of my song
and
give me her honest opinion. She liked it very much. This is how
'Immediate Situation' came about.
I had just started a new job as a
HUD-funded
project manager working with an agency assisting the homeless in
Yakima. My scope is to work with a team of devoted individuals creating
freezing weather shelters for the homeless. Last winter, after seven
weeks of intensive meetings with the community, two churches agreed to
serve as shelters.
I wrote this song the weekend of
the 39th
reunion of the Broadway musical HAIR in
L.A.
During a visit to Santa
Monica, the deepest part of my soul was touched when I saw
so
many
homeless people.

This is one
of those songs that came to me fully formed -- from where, I
don’t know. After listening to it hundreds of
times, I
finally heard
the message. It’s the story
of
how
we lived
for a short time in Laupahoehoe, found the Big Island farm in Pauilo,
mauka where I reconnected with nature and healed from a life
“on
the road.” It was
the
beautiful people and a definite spirit form
there which made the transformation
easier
for me.

Hawai’i is a magic place for me. It’s
where I was
born and remains a large part of
who
I am. The first time I moved away
from Honolulu was at 17-years-old when I joined
the Air
Force.
Later, after many difficult years on the Mainland, I returned to
Hawai’i, where I was surrounded, embraced and nurtured. Not
without work; this song tells
of the magnificence and splendor of the
spirit which is everywhere.

An important
part of my childhood on a Haleiwa sugar plantation was
riding around my
horse and pretending to be a cowboy.
Those
imaginary, innocent
times were pure joy. Because of imagination we are capable of
magnificent feats and in this case,
many years later.

A hawk gave
me this song while I worked on a ranch on the side of
Mauna
Kea.
I stretched wire and installed pipes for an irrigation reservoir.
We branded
and wormed the cattle. My promotion to D-8 operator was worth
more than the $3.40 an hour I was paid. I was taking a break when
I heard
a
voice talk to me.
It
said to me to be careful in front –
there is a bog
down there. I was amazed and in awe! Sure enough, I went right into the
bog and
ripped open my
belly pan. Should of listened; you think?

many friends, were Sammy Davis Jr.
I was fortunate in that Claude
introduced me to Sammy and his beautiful wife, Altovise while vacationing on
O'ahu.
I remember a pleasant scene where
Sammy was coming in on a
catamaran, standing up front holding tight to the mast,
whooping and hollering - what a showman!

During
the tumultuous years 1969 through 1972,
Lyle played the lead role of Claude in HAiR..
HAIR
- Lyle as 'Claude' sings
'Flesh Failures'.
Because
he could not play on the Island of O'ahu, 30
original members of
the Pakalolo tribe were sent to the International Hotel in Las Vegas (now
the Hilton) for a one-year run after none of the theatres in Honolulu
wanted to
risk bad publicity from the ‘obscene’ show.

Lyle
was the only cast member who had completed
military duty before being cast in HAiR... Serving
in the US Air Force for six years during the Vietnam era, he was
a member of the elite honor guard charged with ceremonies to bury the
war dead
– presenting the ‘colors’ to families of
young men
and women. So, when he played the part of Claude who dies every night
on stage, Lyle knows first-hand what it was to grieve heavily.

Lyle has
favorite cities...
New Orleans, Canada, Anchorage
and
Honolulu were his best ever.
New Orleans is
his favorite
He
especially loved the way the crowd applauded by stamping
their
feet on the auditorium floor in New Orleans. The screams during a show
was deafening
at times. The mayor presented the 'key' to New Orleans to Lyle
and his
tribe.
Kenny
Ortega, of High
School Musical fame
and Lyle. Kenny
is performing
'Berger' in the Venus National Tour of HAIR. Lyle is
kneeling
as
'Claude'. Kenny is explaining the vastness
of the universe to 'Claude'.

In
1973 Lyle auditioned for a 'Hawaii-5-0' episode
as a
favor to
a friend and later turned down the roles as something he did not want
to pursue.
Even after Jack
Lord, the
star of the show personally
came
to ask Lyle at the director's
request to take the part. Lyle thanked
Mr. Lord, as Jack asked the
director to leave the two alone for a minute, but then
Lyle said,
that he was not interested in a part playing a 'bad' guy or
criminal. "I took a short supporting role as a cab driver, but that's it!"
Lyle wanted to go back to the land and farm. After being on the road for
four years, as a lead actor/singer he needed a sit down address - just wanted to
touch the
earth - in other words, he wanted to smell the soil again.
Lyle at that time
was wearing a large amber ring which prompted Jack to ask Lyle a
question
about the ring he was wearing. Jack said, "That's an amber
ring isn't it?" Lyle said, "Yes!". "I turned and
looked over my left-side where Jack stood". He
said, "You're
wearing it to ward off evil, arn't you?" "Could be!" -
thinking to myself - what a clever
man. He got me to engage in conversation, but I did
not want to be
in show
business anymore. "Sorry
Jack, I just can't - I need a break away from the industry..." and
so it was, Jack
and I engaged in conversation...I went back to the land, for seven years, like I said...and then shortly after, Lyle produced his 1st 45 single.
